Class 1 Bookstart

Class 1 Bookstart

We are very lucky to be working with Surestart to offer a free child and parent Bookstart programme. The BookStart programme provides an exciting opportunity for you and your child to share stories and rhymes together using a range of interactive resources. Each week you will receive free resources and tips to use and keep at home. The programme will last for 3 more weeks.

The next session will be held on Tuesday 27th November 2018 at 2.30pm in class 1. It will start at 2.30pm and will finish at hometime.

Nursery children who do not normally attend the Tuesday afternoon session are also invited to attend along with an adult from 2.30pm until hometime.

We look forward to seeing you all.

Caring for our bodies

The children have been learning how to care for, and how to look after our bodies. The children were visited by a nurse. The nurse spoke to the children about what she did at the hospital and how she cared for her poorly patients. The nurse also showed equipment that she used at the hospital, and modelled how to use the equipment too. The children loved exploring the equipment to find out how they worked and what they looked like.

The children then pretended to be nurses in the role play hospital and cared for their poorly patients (babies, children and animals).

Celebration of light

As part of our ‘Wonderful Me’ topic we have been busy exploring the celebration of light this week. The children have been busy learning about Guy Fawkes, fireworks, bonfires and Diwali. The children have also been developing their concepts about hot and cold.
The children have been very creative this week, developing different skills and techniques in various light activities.

The children have made sparklers.

The children have been mark making and printing fireworks, bonfires and Diwali pictures using a range of skills and mediums.

The children have been making firework sounds with the instruments and with their voices. The children also combined the sounds they made with ribbon play. “Bang, weeee, whoosh, pop”!

The children have been building and creating fireworks and firework rockets that will explode in the sky (only pretending).

The children have been exploring light with the light toys.

The children are still busy creating their Diwali lamps. More photos to follow!

A love of reading in class 1

The children in class 1 love reading at school and at home.

The children love sharing books with their friends and retelling stories together using books and props.

The nursery children have been learning how to:

-hold a book with two hands,

-how to turn pages one at a time,

-read the book starting from the front cover,

-how to predict what the book is about and how to predict what words say using pictures to help,

-talk about what they see in the pictures,

-and making sounds of what they see in the pictures.

The reception children have been learning how to:

-predict what a book is about and what words might say using pictures to help,

-find letters and sounds, high frequency words and tricky words in the text,

-and sound out the initial sound of words and read new words using their phonics.

The reception children love reading a book at home with their families. The children  talk proudly about reading at home and what they have read. Well done reception! We wonder what else you can read on your out and about travels? Please come and tell us what you have read out and about!

The nursery children have been enjoying taking part in the ‘Little Readers’ programme. Little Readers is a great programme about sharing and exploring nursery rhymes using song and props with families at home. The children have enjoyed taking home their very own themed bookbag with a nursery rhyme card, prop and activity inside for each rhyme. Autumn 1 was based on ‘Mary had a little lamb’ and ‘Pat-a-Cake’.  This half term the nursery children will explore the rhymes ‘Wheels on the bus’ and ‘Incy Wincy Spider’. We look forward to hearing from families on how you have shared and explored the rhymes. Well done nursery! Keep up the hard work!

Cooking club

The key stage two children have really enjoyed cooking club this half term. The children have been learning to cook and bake receipes that originate from Britain. The children have read receipes, measured and weighed ingredients, and used a range of cooking and baking skills to create their very own cooking and baking creations. Well done to you all, the treats were yummy!

Key stage one, it’s your turn after half term 🙂

Learning mathematical and language concepts

Each week in class 1 we are learning 2 different concepts. These concepts are aimed at developing and using language through play, and developing mathematical understanding too. This week we have been learning the words ‘on’ and ‘off’. The children have learnt the words and actions for each word. The adults have been busy supporting children to learn these concept words through their independent learning time in continuous provision and through their learning in focused activities with an adult too.

Autumn learning in Class 1

The children have been busy learning the theme of ‘Autumn’ as part of our ‘Wonderful Me’ topic.

The children sang beautifully in their harvest festival, using actions and props to support. Well done Class 1!

The children loved exploring the outdoors. We collected leaves, exploring colours, size and shape. We took the leaves back to the classroom and used them as part of our learning.

The children created autumn leaf and tree paintings using skills learnt from their write dance and from what they had seen on their autumn walks. The children painted their tree, starting at the bottom; and then finger painted or painted leaves using a paintbrush on their tree using autumn colours.

The children have been busy creating their own little hedgehogs. The children looked at images of hedgehogs and created a hedgehog body, and then added sticks to create their own hedgehog. The children will paint their hedgehogs this week and add details such as eyes.

What a great start we have made to our ‘Autumn’ theme week. We will continue to explore this theme this week as part of our ‘Wonderful Me’ topic.

Hello from class 1 :) We have been busy learning this week.

Class 1 have been busy exploring sounds in the environment and learning their phonics this week. We focused on the letters s a t p. The children have been learning the letter sound and letter name, and mark making the letters too. The children have loved exploring the circles and eights in write dance. The children have been busy practising their mark making skills in the environment. The children remembered how to form the letters and shapes by saying the formation as they wrote and drew them.

The children have also been investigating what numbers mean this week. The children have searched for numbers in the environment, read numbers and counted amounts of objects for different numbers. The children had great fun and talked about what they knew about numbers with great enthusiasm.

The children have loved sharing books in guided reading and developing their PE skills in PE with Chris. What a great week they have had, well done Class 1.

We look forward to another fun-filled week. Have a great weekend.
